Service and Community - by Casey Cote, Vice President
We all know that a key factor in our continuing recovery is being of service. In my first month at MARR, my sponsor, Matt, told me when we began going through the book to take good notes because I would be sponsoring others andtaking them through the book in a just a few months. I nodded and said, “ok” on the outside while thinking there is no way I am going to be able to help others like he is helping me. I couldn’t even read the notes that my shaking hand was writing.
This is where the miracle of the community came in. I was so independent and self-reliant when I arrived at MARR. I knew exactly what was wrong, and I told my counselors and community what was wrong and how I could be “fixed” quickly to return to my life as I had known it. As I slowly became involved with my community and my group in feeling school, my self-centeredness slowly gave way to a sense of caring for others and being of service.
Since leaving MARR, I have seen my “community” expand to include the Atlanta recovery community, my family, my business associates and my church home. I am amazed how God puts people and opportunities in my life where I can continue to be of service. With the organization of the MARR Men’s Alumni Association, my hope is that all of our communities can expand as opportunities are afforded us all to be of service to others both within and without the recovery community. God Bless!
